This guide will try to provide you with useful terms and phrases to help you communicate with Japanese people in FFXI. It is a work in progress and will get updates overtime.
A few things to note is that the general setup with writing this guide is having English → Romaji → Japanese. Now obviously if you want to copy/paste you will need to be running Windower, but if you are not that is why I've also included the Romaji. Also, on a side note copy/pasting on the English client with Japanese characters while useing the auto-translate function can get you to run up with some issues. So if your not sure simply type it to yourself in an /tell. I believe you need to use auto-translate after the Japanese characters not before for it to work properly. If you don't know what Romaji is, it's mainly the Japanese words but written in Roman letters, and not all Japanese people can read Romaji but from my experience most can get the jist of it.
I apologize if they're any mistakes as sometimes its confusing converting real life phrases into game terms and vise-versa. Also I might have taken a step into making the words a bit to literal so I'll go ahead and say sorry for any misinterpretations. If you see any mistakes and/or suggestions on what to be added leave a comment or PM me.
Also, when creating this guide I used the full words for each term. If I did do the abbreviations for every NM, Event, etc.. this guide would be cluttered and disorganized. I've been asked to but chose not to because it should be easy to see that Attowha Chasm -> アットワ地溝 is the same as Attowha -> アットワ. The same goes for different names for some NMs as in Botulus Rex -> ボチュルスレックス. It can be called many different names like プリン -> Pudding, Pudding King, マツコ, and some others I believe. I've just put the names for everything as it should be. It's up to you to put 1 and 2 together.

Common Areas/NMs & Events: Since the majority of the time that both NA/JP players are in the same event is during VW/Abyssea a lot of focus will be on this. Now, when dealing with VW/Abyssea you typically see either the name of the NM or the name of the zone itself. For example, you see a shout that says VW砂丘 which roughly means "dunes". This means this is a shout for Ig-Almia. Understandbly one server may use the Hiragana version when another uses Katakana/Kanji so keep that in the back of your mind, but it will be understood no matter how you use it. If there is a shout for clearing NM's for the purpose of progression you would see a shout with this type of setup: ジュノST2クリア. This basically says "Jeuno Tier2 Clear". When trying to identify a NM/Zone being shouted it is typically abbreviated, so be sure to look out for that. More info about that can be found just below with the jobs. All names have been given in full and no abbreviations used.
San d'Oria – サンドリア || Bastok – バストゥーク || Windurst – ウィンダス Jeuno – ジュノ || Zilart – ジラート || Promathia – プロマシア || Aht Urhgan – アトルガン || Seekers of Adoulin – アドゥリンの魔境 North – 北 || East – 東 || South – 南 || West – 西
Things You Should Know: Okay, lets start off with jobs. I will be giving you the full name for each, but that does not mean that will be the exact name you see(like in a shout). Most likely it will be abbreviated just as we do, for example Red Mage → rdm, 赤魔道士 → 赤.
An example of how I would personally ask to join a group would be: あきはありますか?いきたいですー 白・黒・シーフ・学者・召喚士・青・赤 Now to break this down it basically says, "Can I join you? I have Whm, Blm, Thf, Sch, Smn, Blu, and Rdm."
Okay.. next lets work with typical words you would see pop up in Voidwatch. Also, say your on Blu and want to know which spells to split up with the other JP Blu. You can simply say すみません、私→氷水闇光? Which is the simple way of asking if those 4 elements are alright. Remember, the best thing you can do is keep stuff simple and to the point especially if you ain't too keen with JP. An example of when your in a VW party and someone calls out a proc, it will typically have this setup: 黒雷3 or 学アビ. The first would be "Blm Thunder 3" and the second would be "Sch ability" which would mean you need to use Libra. Take note of how the full name for Blm or ability is not used. Only three numbers will be used in VW: 1– Green/Regular || 3 – Red/Highly || 5 – Extremely/White. On a side note, if you ever see VW〆 or the same goes for a Abyssea/party it generally means that that group is now full and is not looking for anyone else.
インスニ – Way of saying Sneak and Invisible at the same time. イーハン – Way of saying Ochain and Aegis at the same time. オーバーキル – If something you just fought was way "Overkill". 乱獲 – When something is being "overfished". カーバンクルマラソン – Basically saying to use the "Carby pull method" to retrieve an enemy. スキル上げパーティ – Skill up party. ゾンビアタック – When you wipe and want to "zombie" it till you recover. メナポ – Said when the focus of Delve is to just work on plasm farming. 寝落ち – Your falling asleep and ready to stop playing. 横取り – Basically if a mob's name goes yellow when fighting it and it's taken from someone else.
Also a fun little thing you can play around with is these Japanese Emoticons. All rights belong to their respective companies. If you would like to share this guide you may do so freely. The only term is that you give credit. It would also be a good idea to give a direct link to this page instead of just copy/pasting so that you can get the most current information.
Update: Since I do not currently play FFXI any longer the updates may come extremely slow or even stop completely. I've added some things that I think might be of importance in the Sept. 9, 2014 but what really is the key things I'm not sure of. I appreciate all of the support that everyone has given me.
